<p>Palestanian Oud and Buzoq player, son of Elias Jubran &#8212; Abu Khaled, as he is known, is one of the most skilled oud makers in the Middle East &#8212; Khaled is also brother to the inimitable Kamilya Jubran, a remarkably gifted singer of international, if still somewhat minor, fame. At the age of 25 Abu Khaled, a soldering and welding worker in the Galilee village of Rameh, had encountered live oud music for the first time. Borrowing the one oud that existed in the whole village he discovered a talent for reproducing, and eventually mastering, tunes of the classic Arab repertoire. Overtaken by the urge to possess his own specimen of the instrument, Abu Khaled undertook a gargantuan research project, soliciting the help of a host of relations and friends in order to produce, with his own two hands, the perfect oud. Soon after this he progressed onto other instruments, becoming a self- taught artisan of the most refined standards.</p>

<p>Liban Jazz Director Karim Ghattas talks about his plans to bring Lebanon’s most popular jazz festival over the border to Syria.</p>
<p><strong>What is Liban Jazz?</strong></p>
<p>Liban Jazz is Lebanon’s premier jazz festival. I established Liban Jazz in 2004 and have since promoted 40 concerts by internationally acclaimed Arab and foreign jazz artists like Anouar Brahem, Paolo Fresu and Archie Shepp to name a few.</p>
<p><strong>How do you choose the artists?</strong></p>
<p>The keywords are new and different, but not necessarily famous. We have featured internationally acclaimed artists with long and impressive CVs, as well as young musicians that I have stumbled across playing in a small bar. Furthermore, we are dedicated to quality and current music. We only feature artists who have just released an album or are about to release one.</p>
<p>Our concerts are for those who would like to discover a new kind of music that they don’t usually hear. We want to address the local Arab audience and not tourists. Therefore, we never arrange concerts in summer. Rather, we present them from September to June.</p>
<p><strong>Why Syria?</strong></p>
<p>I first came to Syria as a refugee during the 2006 war in Lebanon and I fell in love with the country. I’ve been spending every weekend here. I’ve discovered that Syrians are very interested in cultural projects and I was astounded by the thriving cultural scene here. Although many artist friends like Marcel Khalife told me how great the Syrian audience is, it was only when Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft, who is going to perform in Lebanon this month, asked me to arrange a concert for him in Syria that I seriously considered the idea of promoting music here.</p>
<p><strong>So what concerts can the Syrian audience expect?</strong></p>
<p>We launched our concert series in Damascus Opera House this May with a performance by award-winning Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft.  He  played excerpts from his new album that is to be released at the end of the year. We are also organising a concert by the Italian-American trio AIR in September and there’s much more to come.</p>

<p>لا يخرج مشروع قناة الويب «عرمرم» عن منظومة الرفض. «الإعلام الحالي غير قادر على خلق حوار حقيقي ليعبّر عن الشباب»، تقول إحدى مؤسسي المشروع سيرين الأحمد عن سبب إطلاقه. www.aramram.com بدأ بالبث فعلاً عبر 4 قنوات تبث برامج لا تتعدّى ثلاث دقائق: «عنجد» تعالج قضايا اجتماعيّة جديّة، «من هان» تولي اهتماماً بالمبدعين الأردنيين والأماكن الأردنية بطريقة غير رسميّة، «فزلكات» للبرامج الساخرة، و«عرمرميات» لمساهمات الشباب. «إذا ما بنسمع الخبر من التلفزيون الأردني في غيره، وإذا ما بنسمعه من غيره بنقرأه من مدوّن أو Youtube»، تقول سيرين بتحدٍّ يجب أن يُخشى منه.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Al Balad Theatre, one of the city’s last remaining (original) grand theatre houses, is proud to announce the launch of the Al Balad Classic Cinema Club, commencing this coming June.</p>
<p>Each month, Al Balad Classic Cinema Club will be presenting four nights of the landmark productions of a bygone era, featuring the world’s great luminaries of the silver screen.</p>
<p>Besides the film screenings, Al Balad Classic Cinema Club will be hosting platform talks and discussions with actors, directors and classic film enthusiasts following the viewing.</p>
<p>For its initial offering to commemorate the icon’s birthday,<br />
Al Balad Classic Cinema Club will present four box office classics staring the beguiling Marilyn Monroe, beginning with How to Marry a Millionaire on June 21.</p>
<p>In addition, and for the first time in Jordan, a bonus<br />
presentation of her last sadly unfinished movie Something&#8217;s Got to Give will be staged on the final night on June 24.</p>
<p>The purpose of the club is twofold: to pioneer the first classic film club in Jordan, thereby enhancing the different genres of motion picture entertainment available in the country, and to create a forum for classic movie buffs and budding local film makers.</p>
<p>Al Balad Classsic Cinema Club will provide a dynamic platform for all forms of cultural events.</p>
<p>Each week of the month we will be screening a selection of classic Arabic and foreign movies of different genres, featuring the iconic stars and directors of the 20th century.</p>
<p>The venue will be Al Balad Theatre with screenings commencing at 8:00 p.m.</p>

<p>This unfinished remake of My Favorite Wife, due to the firing of Monroe from the film, was her last movie. She was eventually re-hired, but died in August, 1962.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;text-align: justify" dir="rtl"><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">في &#8220;مسرح البلد&#8221; بعمّان الأسبوع الماضي، دخل الناس إلى المسرح، مراهنين على مزاجهم الموسيقي المغاير أيضاً. هناك تركوا وراءهم (كوكباً) متخماً بالسلطة والحروب. فلا قضايا كبرى هنا: لا ذكر لفلسطين أو العراق، أو حديث عن مجاعات الصومال أو صراع دارفور. تختفي كل هذه الهموم اليوميّة مقابل موسيقى مخدِّرة تستقي كلماتها من حوار &#8220;عاديّ&#8221; في مكان &#8220;عاديّ&#8221; ومُمِلّ كعمّان، وهي ما يمكن أن يقوله (عمّانيّ) في لحظة هلوسة: &#8220;خليك حشِّش/ خلي الدنيا عمرها ما تحلالك/ وحياتك سودا وتحكي لمين إنك مش طايق حالك/ يوم دماغك أخضر/ يوم دماغك بنّي/ وأوعى تخش (تدخل) عالأبيض/ خدها نصيحة منّي&#8221;. (ما في إشي نسوّي).</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;text-align: justify" dir="rtl"><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">هذه الأغنية التي كتبها بالاشتراك مع الموسيقي الأردني &#8220;طارق الناصر&#8221;، والتي يمكن انتشالها من أغاني الاسطوانة كنموذج عن باقي أعماله، يمكن أن تشبه، تماماً، ضحالة المشهد الثقافي في الأردن ومنه الموسيقى&#8230; فإذا كانت الموسيقى الحقيقيّة و(البديلة) هي موسيقى مناوئة ومضادة للثقافة التي تتبناها السلطة في كل العالم، فالمَخرَج في هذه الحالة هو التنكيل بالذات كبديل عن النقد المباشر للثقافة الرسميّة. هذه النّزعة التي أدّت لظهور حركات الموسيقى المضادة تحت اسم (الروك المخدّر) في الستينيّات مثل </span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><span style="font-size: 14pt" dir="ltr">Pink Floyd</span></span><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO"> و</span><span style="font-family: Times New Roman"><span style="font-size: 14pt" dir="ltr">The Doors</span></span><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">. ولا تبتعد مؤلّفات الروسان بشكل عام عن هذه الأجواء، فإضافة إلى الحفلات الحيّة الصاخبة مع الإضاءة كمشروع لا يقل أهمية عن الأداء، هناك الصوت المتقشّف واللامبالي، والحضور العالي للكيبورد والغيتار الكهربائي. إضافة إلى مزج هذا الأسلوب بإيقاع الريغي، والأداء الصوتي الشبيه بتحرّر وانطلاق أداء مغنيي &#8220;الراي&#8221;، إلى الحد الذي يمكن لمستمعيه أن يشعروا بالاكتفاء الموسيقي أثناء سماعه.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;text-align: justify" dir="rtl"><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">يمكن تقسيم الاسطوانة إلى قسمين، الأوّل: أعمال تم تسجيلها في الاستوديو بطريقة الحفلات الحيّة، (أي من دون تركيب أصوات آلة على أخرى). وفي هذا القسم يمكن استثناء أغانٍ نافرة عن النسيج الذي تتكون منه الاسطوانة، وأعمال الروسان عادة، كأغنية &#8220;أسمر&#8221; لفرقة &#8220;ميامي&#8221; الكويتيّة التي نشعر أنها أقحمت ضمنه. أما القسم الثاني اللافت، فيتكوّن من أغانٍ سجّلت في حفلٍ أقيم نهاية العام الماضي.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;text-align: justify" dir="rtl"><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">لكن هل يمنعنا حسّ التهكّم العالي لأغاني الروسان من الحكم عليها وانتقادها؟ إذ تمنح الكلمات أحياناً شعوراً عدميّاً: &#8220;حاس حالي قاعد على كنباي/ بعزّ الناس وبشرب شاي/ ولا حدا واقف وراي/ ومراي ومراي ومراي/ (..) وأنا وانتا أحلى تنين/ وأنا وانتا أحلى تلاتة/ زيح طعوجت الأنتين/ يا حبيبي إنتا أخو(..)&#8221;. هذه الهلوسة ربما ترضي المتلقّي وقت سماعها، لكنها لن تستمر كحالة موسيقيّة مؤثرة. بذلك تتفلّت موسيقى الروسان من إطار الحُكم الجاد، لخروجها عن قوانين الأعمال الفنيّة، </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Arabic Transparent&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">حتى أننا نعتقد أنه يعيش على كوكب آخر</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO"> لأنه، ببساطة، يقول الحقيقة غير المواربة</span><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Arabic Transparent&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">. </span><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">الحقيقة التي تكاد أن تودي باللحظات الشفّافة لمصلحة السخرية المؤلمة.</span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;text-align: justify" dir="rtl"><span style="font-size: 14pt;font-family: &quot;Simplified Arabic&#038;quot" lang="AR-JO">ليس مطلوباً من يزن، بالطبع، التصدّي لمشكلات اجتماعية أو سياسيّة، لكن ربما عليه استثمار هذه الطاقة الهائلة، وهذه الأجواء المهيّأة لنشر الموسيقى البديلة في الأردن، لرصد التحوّلات الاجتماعيّة برؤية أعمق. لا نعتقد أن هذه الأعمال يمكن أن تنجو بصاحبها من النقد، فالنموذج الأبرز، زياد الرحباني، المتهكّم الأكبر، كان على قدر من الذكاء ليؤثّر في أجيال شابّة حتى الآن.</span></p>
